AAA predicts that over 119,000 South Dakotans will travel over Memorial Day weekend, an 8% increase from last year. This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2000.
The vast majority of travelers from South Dakota, 88.5%, will drive to their destinations. This is in line with national trends, as 89.7% of Americans are expected to travel by car for Memorial Day weekend.
“This is expected to be a very busy Memorial Day weekend for travel,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We encourage travelers to plan ahead and make sure their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road.”
Shawn Steward, manager of public and government affairs for AAA in South Dakota, echoed Twidale’s sentiments, telling SDPB that they want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. That’s why it’s important to check your tires, car battery, and other essential parts of your vehicle before you leave home.
