James Beddow, fondly known as Jim, passed away on Sunday in Sioux Falls at the age of 81, following a sudden and unforeseen illness, as stated in his obituary.
A highly respected figure, Beddow holds the distinction of being the longest-serving president in the history of Dakota Wesleyan University, having dedicated his tenure to the institution from 1981 to 1994. During his presidency, Beddow made significant contributions to the growth and development of the university, leaving an indelible mark on its legacy.
Not limited to his accomplishments in academia, Beddow ventured into politics, becoming the Democratic nominee for governor in the year 1994. Although his bid for the governorship was ultimately unsuccessful, Beddow’s campaign showcased his commitment to public service and his passion for making a positive impact on the lives of South Dakotans.
To honor the memory of James Beddow, an open house celebration of his life will take place at the First United Methodist Church from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 29. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Jim Beddow & Cooper Johnson O’Gorman tennis scholarship.
