Authorities have identified the man killed in a shooting Tuesday night in Vermillion as 38-year-old Chase Kinchen. Kinchen, who violated a protection order, forced his way into a home armed with a handgun and threatened the occupants. He was shot and killed by a guest in the home in an act of self-defense.
In the months leading up to the shooting, Kinchen had assaulted and threatened the homeowner, who had a protection order against him. On the night of the incident, Kinchen fired his handgun at a guest, who then retrieved a gun from a vehicle in the garage and returned fire, killing Kinchen.
Court records revealed a history of violence by Kinchen against the woman residing in the home. Previous incidents included assault, threats, and repeated violations of protection orders. Despite the ongoing investigation, police report that all involved parties are cooperating. An autopsy has been conducted on Kinchen.
