Medicaid Expansion Provides Affordable Health Insurance Access to Thousands in South Dakota

South Dakota’s Medicaid Expansion program has made health insurance more accessible in the state, with nearly 7,500 residents enrolling since July 1.

This expansion extends coverage to around 52,000 eligible South Dakotans, including adults aged 19 to 64 with incomes at or below 138% of the federal poverty level.

Penny Kelley, Outreach and Enrollment Services Program Manager at the Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas (CHAD), highlights that individuals with incomes of up to approximately $20,000 per year and families of four with an income of around $40,000 per year can now access affordable health insurance through Medicaid.

CHAD’s health insurance navigators are available throughout the state to assist residents in finding affordable coverage.

While Medicaid applications are open year-round, applying during the upcoming open enrollment season from November 11 to January 15 can reduce insurance costs.
