MITCHELL, S.D. — Authorities are investigating a sophisticated ATM theft that targeted two BankWest locations in Mitchell, resulting in an estimated $80,000 in cash being stolen.
According to the Mitchell Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:47 p.m. on Feb. 15 after reports that two Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) had been broken into and large amounts of cash withdrawn. A review of security footage later determined the burglaries occurred overnight between approximately 10:45 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, and 2:46 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Police say the suspect used a method known as “jackpotting” to access the machines. Sgt. Sgt. McGlaughlin said the suspect was able to open the front of the ITMs and gain access to internal computer components, causing the machines to dispense large sums of cash without requiring legitimate banking or transaction information.
“Jackpotting” is a form of ATM attack in which criminals manipulate a machine’s internal systems — often through malware or unauthorized hardware — to force it to release its cash reserves. Law enforcement agencies across the country have reported similar incidents in recent years.
At this time, investigators say it does not appear that any personal banking information was obtained during the thefts. While the final total is still being calculated, authorities estimate that approximately $80,000 was taken between the two locations.
Surveillance footage shows the suspect approaching the ATMs on foot while wearing a mask and clothing that concealed their identity. No vehicle information has been released as officers continue reviewing additional security video from the surrounding area.
BankWest is headquartered in Pierre and operates approximately 25 branch locations across South Dakota.
