The Mitchell Police Department is issuing a public safety reminder after recent reports of vehicles ignoring warning signals at railroad crossings. The department has seen an increase in incidents where drivers speed through crossings while the red lights are flashing, putting themselves and others at risk.
According to State Law (32-29-4), when a law enforcement officer or any visible or audible signal warns of an approaching train, drivers are required to stop between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail. Drivers should not proceed until it is safe to do so.
Violating this law is classified as a Class 2 misdemeanor in South Dakota, which carries fines and possible legal consequences. While enforcement of the law continues, officials are urging the public to prioritize safety around railroad tracks.
The police department is working to raise awareness about this issue and ensure that drivers in the Mitchell area understand the importance of obeying railroad crossing signals.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert when approaching crossings and report any suspicious or unsafe driving behavior near railroad tracks to local authorities.
