MITCHELL, S.D. — The Mitchell Police Department is reminding residents that electric motorcycles, including popular brands such as Sur-Ron and Talaria, are subject to the same laws and safety requirements as traditional motorcycles in South Dakota.
In a public safety message, the department said the vehicles have become increasingly popular in recent years but are classified as motor vehicles under state law and must comply with all applicable traffic regulations.
According to police, operators of electric motorcycles must possess a valid driver’s license, carry liability insurance, maintain valid state registration and use approved eye protection. Riders younger than 18 are required to wear a helmet, and the vehicles must be equipped with proper lighting.
The department also emphasized that electric motorcycles cannot be operated on sidewalks, over curbs, through business lawns or in other areas not intended for motor vehicle traffic. Riders are required to follow the same rules of the road as other motorists.
Police said officers have observed riders operating the vehicles in ways that create safety concerns and violate state law.
The department urged parents to understand that electric motorcycles are not toys and carry the same responsibilities as traditional motorcycles. Officials encouraged families to review legal requirements and safe operating practices before purchasing or allowing a child to operate one of the vehicles.
“Our goal is education and safety for everyone using our streets, sidewalks, and public spaces,” the department said.
