The National Institute of Health has provided Sanford Research with a $2 million grant for a five-year study on the development of neurons in the brain.
Sanford’s research team will utilize the funding to investigate gene mutations associated with the rare condition known as macrocephaly, a brain enlargement disorder with symptoms resembling autism.
Macrocephaly affects approximately one in 3,000 infants, as reported in a Sanford press release.
Dr. Louis Jan Pilaz leads the research project with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of how this disease originates during brain development.
