The Department of Criminal Investigation is looking into an officer-involved shooting in Sioux Falls.
The incident occurred early Friday morning following a report of a person rummaging through a homeowner’s car. The suspect pointed a handgun at the homeowner before fleeing the scene.
Later, officers encountered an individual matching the suspect’s description and attempted to make contact, but the person ran away. A pursuit ensued, and an officer fired their weapon when encountering the armed suspect in a backyard.
The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries, was treated at the hospital, and then transferred to the Minnehaha County Jail. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
The suspect, identified as Sean Kilbourne, is facing charges for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and is non-compliant with his parole status. This incident marks the first officer-involved shooting for the department this year, and the investigation is still ongoing.
