Parents File Complaints Against Rapid City Area Schools Alleging Disability Rights Violations

Three families with students having disabilities at Rapid City Stevens High School in South Dakota have filed complaints with the state’s Department of Education against Rapid City Area Schools.

Nonprofit legal services agency, Disability Rights South Dakota, submitted the complaints, citing issues such as shortened school days, inadequate inclusion, unqualified staff, and insufficient services for students with disabilities.

The school district claims to have addressed the concerns promptly, but the state’s Department of Education will investigate potential violations of state and federal laws.

Disability Rights South Dakota emphasizes the importance of ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate services and support in education.

Federal laws, including Section 504, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and Title II, protect students with disabilities in the school setting.

The complaints have not been fully disclosed due to student privacy concerns.
