Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Deadwood; Driver Charged with Failure to Yield

A 68-year-old man from North Carolina was critically injured Wednesday night when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Pioneer Way in Deadwood.

The incident occurred when the man was in the crosswalk and a vehicle, which was stopped to turn, allowed him to pass but another vehicle in the outside lane proceeded through the intersection and hit him.

The injured man was airlifted to Rapid City Monument Health. Alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash. The driver of the vehicle was charged with failure to yield right of way to the pedestrian.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, and the investigation is ongoing.
