Rapid City Area Schools Superintendent Nicole Swigart has been placed on a 30-day leave, the district announced Monday. This decision follows Swigart’s comments in a letter to the Office of Civil Rights in May regarding the district’s treatment of Native American students.
During her leave, Swigart will undergo cultural competency training and work towards rebuilding positive relationships with the Native American community.
The district expressed confidence in Swigart’s leadership and commitment to providing a safe, non-discriminatory environment for all students.
Additionally, the district will mandate cultural sensitivity training for all employees to enhance awareness and understanding of diverse perspectives and experiences.
