Report Reveals Mental Health Compliance Issues at South Dakota VA Hospital

A recent Department of Veterans Affairs report highlights non-compliance with mental health regulations at the Sioux Falls Royal C. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital in South Dakota.

The report from the VA’s inspector general details deficiencies in required patient screenings and mental health evaluations, particularly in suicide risk assessments for at-risk veterans.

The inspection, conducted late last month, revealed that over a quarter of veterans at the hospital did not receive mandated same-day screenings, posing potential patient safety risks.

The inspector general recommends increased staff efforts to ensure timely risk assessments for veterans, as the facility serves nearly 300,000 patients annually.
