Salem, South Dakota, is set to expand with the development of Colonial Estates, a new housing project aimed at addressing the town’s housing shortage.
The project will feature 18 new single-family and multi-family homes, replacing the Colonial Manner Nursing Home, which was damaged in a 2022 derecho.
The Salem Economic Development Corporation raised $250,000 from community donations and secured $750,000 in state housing grants for the initiative.
The project is seen as crucial to attracting new residents, with the proximity to Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Madison making Salem an increasingly desirable location for commuters.
