Sioux Falls City Council and Police Department are addressing the surge in stolen vehicles as the city experiences growth.
With reported cases doubling from 791 in 2019 to 1,495 in 2023, a $50,000 “Lock It and Pocket” campaign aims to raise community awareness.
City Councilor Sarah Cole announced the initiative, emphasizing digital advertising through Google, Instagram, Facebook, and Spotify.
The campaign urges residents to lock their vehicles and pocket their keys, with statistics revealing that eight out of 10 stolen vehicles result from owners leaving keys in the vehicle.
The campaign’s success will be evaluated in December, with a focus on reducing theft reports in the coming year.
