30-year-old Steven Gillespie of Sioux Falls was arrested on Sunday morning for aggravated assault and rape.
The incident occurred at around 1 a.m., with the victim able to call the police at 11 a.m.
The victim, a 34-year-old woman, knew the suspect and was with him in an apartment in the 2600 block of E. 8th St. with several other people. Once the other people left, the suspect strangled the victim and then raped her. The victim was able to get out of the apartment and call the police.
Gillespie was found at his apartment and was arrested. He is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail without bond.
