31-year-old Samuel Vining of Sioux Falls was identified as the fatality in a two-vehicle crash that occurred 18 miles west of Kadoka.
The accident took place on Saturday, July 22, at 9:39 p.m. when Vining, driving his 2020 Hyundai Elantra in the wrong direction, collided head-on with a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country traveling east in the eastbound lane of I-90, near mile marker 134.
Vining suffered fatal injuries despite wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Chrysler, 24-year-old Isaac Thompson from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and his passenger, Mahra Wick, 22, from Gile, Wisconsin, both sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and received medical attention at nearby hospitals.
The crash led to a two-hour closure of I-90, with traffic rerouted during the investigation and cleanup.
