Three bats in Sioux Falls have tested positive for rabies in the past month, prompting officials to warn pet owners to make sure their animals are vaccinated.
“Rabies is a serious disease that can be fatal,” said Patty Beckman, supervisor of Animal Control. “It’s important to make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations, especially if you live in an area where bats are common.”
Bats are the most common animal in South Dakota to carry rabies. In 2022, 16 bats in the state tested positive for the disease.
Beckman said that bats are often found in homes, especially during the summer months. If you find a bat in your home, do not touch it. Instead, call Animal Control at 367-7000.
“We will come and remove the bat and test it for rabies,” Beckman said. “If the bat tests positive, we will notify you so that you can take steps to protect your pets and family.”
Rabies is a virus that attacks the nervous system. It is spread through the saliva of infected animals, usually through a bite. Symptoms of rabies can include fever, headache, and muscle weakness. If you think you or your pet may have been exposed to rabies, seek medical attention immediately.
There is no cure for rabies, but it is preventable. By vaccinating your pets and taking precautions against bat bites, you can help protect yourself and your family from this deadly disease.
