South Dakota’s State Board of Education Standards has approved changes to the schedule for K-12 education standards.
Health education standards have been moved to 2025-26 from their original date of 2023-24.
Social studies standards will now be considered in 2029-30, instead of 2028-29.
Computer science standards will be introduced on a five-year schedule due to the rapidly evolving nature of technology, with the state board set to consider them in the fall of 2024 and again in 2029-30.
The board emphasized its flexibility to modify the standards-revision schedule based on feedback and stakeholder needs, as they aim to keep education standards relevant.
Public hearings on proposed revisions to various standards are also underway.
