South Dakota Grants $500,000 for Mosquito Control to Combat West Nile Virus

The South Dakota Department of Health is distributing $500,000 to nearly 200 cities, tribes, and counties to enhance mosquito control measures and prevent the spread of West Nile Virus.

The funding amounts were determined based on population size and historical case data.

West Nile Virus, first detected in South Dakota in 2002, results in variable yearly case numbers, ranging from under a dozen to over 100.

While no human cases have been reported in South Dakota this year, mosquito pools in Brookings County have tested positive for the virus.
