South Dakota Medicaid Adding, Subtracting Users

With changes in Federal and state law, there are thousands of people losing and gaining Medicaid insurance coverage.

Federal law changes allowed states to drop people that gained Medicaid coverage during the pandemic.

A constitutional amendment passed by South Dakota voters last year expanded Medicaid coverage as of July 1st.

Assistant Department of Social Services Secretary, Brenda Tidball appeared before the interim Appropriations Committee of the South Dakota legislature last week.

She said they have opened up applications for the expanded Medicaid.

Tidball says they have added about 1,700 new Medicaid recipients in the first few weeks and that about 53,000 people lost their coverage as of July 1st.

Legislators also questioned Tidball about the staffing needed to deal with the expansion and any indications of fraud in the program.
