South Dakota Public Universities Join Forces for Quantum Computing Center

Four public universities in South Dakota—Dakota State University, South Dakota Mines, South Dakota State University, and the University of South Dakota—are collaborating to establish a Center for Quantum Information Science and Technology.

This initiative, considered the state’s “next big industry” by Governor Kristi Noem, awaits approval of over $6 million in one-time funds from the South Dakota Legislature.

Quantum computing, with its ability to solve complex problems exponentially faster than traditional computers, holds promise for advancements in cybersecurity, healthcare, agriculture, and more.

The universities aim to leverage their expertise in physics, mathematics, and computer science to stay ahead in the emerging field of quantum computing and position themselves for federal funding and further research opportunities.
