South Dakota State Top No. 21 Oregon in Hawaii

LAIE, Hawaii – South Dakota State women’s basketball knocked off its second top-25 opponent of the season Tuesday with a 75-70 victory over No. 21 Oregon in the final game of the North Shore Showcase.

SDSU improves to 4-2 on the season while Oregon falls to 6-2. Both of the Ducks’ losses so far this year came at the North Shore Showcase.

The Jackrabbits had four players in double figures, led by 19 from Brooklyn MeyerPaige Meyer added 16, followed by 13 from Haleigh Timmer and 11 from Madysen Vlastuin.

The teams traded buckets throughout the opening quarter and the Ducks led by just three after 10 minutes. The Jacks put together a nine-point run over three minutes in the second quarter to go ahead by four, 28-24, and did not trail again. SDSU led by four, 40-36, at halftime.

The third quarter again went back-and-forth, with neither team scoring more than two consecutive buckets. SDSU led 56-51 with one quarter to play.

Oregon worked back to tie the game at 60-all at the 6:14-mark in the fourth and again at 64 with 2:45 on the clock. From there, Timmer and Paige Meyer combined for the next eight Jackrabbits points to go ahead by six, 72-66. With less than 30 seconds to play, Timmer and Madison Mathiowetz were clutch from the charity stripe to secure the win.

Brooklyn Meyer also contributed eight rebounds and two steals, both team highs. Timmer added six boards and Paige Meyer tallied five. Paige Meyer matched Brooklyn Meyer’s two steals and dished a team-best four assists. She also had one block.

Vlastuin, in her second game back from injury, went 4-for-4 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from long range. The Jackrabbits shot 48 percent as team and went 6-of-12 from the 3-point line.

Oregon knocked down only one trey but were 49 percent from the field overall. The Jacks had a 30-28 edge in rebounding. The Ducks had the advantage in steals, 7-4, and blocks, 4-1.

Deja Kelly finished with 19 points for Oregon, followed by 10 points and eight rebounds for Amina Muhammad.

NOTES

  • Oregon is SDSU’s second win over an AP Top 25 team this season and 19th in the Division I era. SDSU is 19-42 against ranked teams.
  • Brooklyn Meyer had led the team in scoring for all six games this season.
