South Dakota VFW, Auxiliary members gather in Mitchell for annual convention

MITCHELL, S.D. — Veterans and auxiliary members from across the state will gather in Mitchell this week for the 96th Annual Convention of the South Dakota Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary.

The four-day event is scheduled for June 11-14 at the Highland Conference Center and will feature business meetings, workshops, leadership development sessions and opportunities for fellowship among members dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.

Organizers said the convention serves as a forum for members to conduct organizational business, recognize achievements and discuss issues affecting veterans, active-duty service members and military families.

Among those expected to attend are South Dakota VFW Department Commander Martin Christensen and South Dakota Department Auxiliary President Sue Jones.

The convention will be headquartered at the Highland Conference Center, located at 2000 Highland Way in Mitchell. Accommodations are available through host hotels, including the Comfort Inn & Suites and Hampton Inn.

The South Dakota Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is composed of family members of veterans who have honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The organization supports veterans, service members and their families through advocacy, community service and patriotic programs.

Convention activities will focus on strengthening the organization’s mission, building leadership skills and promoting continued service to South Dakota’s veteran community.

Officials said the annual gathering provides an opportunity for members from across the state to share ideas, celebrate accomplishments and reaffirm their commitment to serving those who have served the nation.
