Unity Rd., South Dakota’s first licensed medical cannabis dispensary outside of tribal lands, will cease operations on December 7, 2024, due to challenges within the state’s cannabis industry.
Opened in July 2022, Unity Rd. and its partner location, The Hartford Connection, have faced obstacles such as fluctuating customer demand, product availability issues, and limited registered medical cannabis cardholders.
Despite strong voter support for medical cannabis in 2020, recreational marijuana measures have repeatedly failed in the state, with the latest ballot measure defeated in November 2024.
Unity Rd. expressed disappointment over regulatory challenges, calling it a factor in their decision to close.
South Dakota currently licenses 38 marijuana cultivators, 18 product manufacturers, and 68 dispensaries, among other industry participants.
