South Dakota’s Rapid Population Growth: Reaching 1 Million Residents by 2030

South Dakota’s population is growing rapidly, with the state poised to reach 1 million residents by 2030.

Despite nearly 29,000 people leaving the state, an estimated 34,859 newcomers arrived last year.

Minnesota was the primary source of new residents, followed by international migrants and people from neighboring states like Iowa and Georgia.

However, some states saw no residents moving to South Dakota, (Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) as indicated by the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey.
