State prison offender Joseph Schmitz has died of apparent natural causes.
Schmitz, age 55, passed away July 5, 2025, in an end-of-life care setting at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield.
At the time of his death, Schmitz was serving a sentence from Lake County for first-degree manslaughter.
