Tragic School Bus Collision Claims Life of Teenage Cyclist in Brookings

A tragic collision between a Brookings school bus and a 16-year-old girl on a bicycle resulted in the girl’s death at the intersection of Fourth and Main in downtown Brookings on Friday morning, April 12th.

The incident occurred as the bus, driven by 46-year-old Tami Varpness, was making a right turn onto Main Street while the bicyclist was crossing Fourth Street.

The collision resulted in the girl being pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities, including the Brookings Police, Brookings County Sheriff’s deputies, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol, responded to the scene, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
