The United States Department of Agriculture has increased the funding for the Emergency Grain Storage Facility Assistance Program to $80 million due to high demand from grain producers across nine states, including South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota.
The program provides financial assistance to farmers who experienced losses due to disaster events such as derechos, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and winter storms.
Producers from nine states were eligible to apply for relief money covering 75 to 90 percent of eligible expenses for building grain storage capacity or purchasing equipment.
The additional money comes in response to the damage caused by a derecho in South Dakota on May 12, 2022, which affected many grain storage facilities.
The application for the relief funds has now been closed.
