A 19-year old man from Brookings was killed in a four-vehicle crash early Thursday.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol said it happened shortly before 6 a.m. on I-29 at mile marker 140, seven miles north of Brookings.
The patrol says a 38-year old woman from Toronto was driving southbound in the northbound lanes and hit a pickup driven by the 19-year old Brookings man. His truck then spun and struck a pickup driven by a 34-year old man from Ohio. The patrol said a fourth vehicle — an SUV driven by a 25-year old man from Brookings — was also traveling northbound at the time and was involved in the crash.
The 19-year old Brookings man sustained fatal injuries. The Toronto woman was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other two drivers were not injured.
In addition to the Highway Patrol, the Brookings Fire Department responded with two engines and a rescue truck, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene.
Names have not been released, pending notification of family members.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate.
