Build Dakota Scholarship earns kudos from a special visitor

One of the most recognizable supporters of technical education paid a visit to Mitchell Technical College Thursday to help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Build Dakota Scholarship program.

Mike Rowe is best known as the host of “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel. “Build Dakota is the most robust scholarship program I’ve seen for the trades,” said Rowe. “And the degree to which you’ve brought in private industry to match it, and make is work…never seen anything like it.”

He says the stigma attached to the trades is shifting but there’s more to do. “Inundate the country with example, after example after example of how young men and women, who took the time to master a skill that’s in demand went on to prosper,” Rowe said. “It’s that simple.”

Earlier Thursday Rowe visited Southeast and Lake Area Technical Colleges before stopping in Mitchell and heading west to Rapid City.
