Celebrating Teacher Apprenticeship Program Graduates

Nearly 50 participants graduated from Dakota State University and Northern State University as part of the South Dakota Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway program on May 9, 2026. These hardworking educators combined their years of classroom experience as school paraprofessionals with the rigorous educational opportunity to achieve their dreams of obtaining an education degree to pursue teacher certification.

“My administration will continue to prioritize investing in our students, communities, and state — and the SD TAP program is one of several ways we are delivering strong results for education,” said Governor Larry Rhoden. “Congratulations to our newest graduates! I am grateful for your commitment to serving our students and shaping the future of South Dakota education.”

Through perseverance, participants earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary, secondary, or special education while they continued to work as a paraprofessional in their school. DSU and NSU provided the necessary coursework over a two-year period, culminating in a student-teaching experience, resulting in the completion of a bachelor’s degree in education.

“While traveling across the state, I have had the privilege to visit with both current Tappers and SD TAP alum and can see the impact they are making in their classrooms,” said Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves. “These individuals demonstrate remarkable dedication to enhancing education in South Dakota.”

Since the initial launch of SD TAP in 2023, 118 participants have graduated from the program. In joint collaboration with the Board of Regents, DOE, DLR, DSU, NSU, and local school districts, SD TAP supports and uplifts school paraprofessionals to take the leap and continue making an impact in the K-12 education system. “I love how this program allows individuals to stay in their home community, work, and complete their education,” said Secretary of Labor and Regulation Marcia Hultman.
