City of Mitchell pursuing a State Department of Transportation Bridge Improvement Grant

The Mitchell City Council green-lighted pursuing a South Dakota Transportation Department Bridge Improvement Grant. Public Works Director Joe Schroeder says it’s for the canal bridge spanning Firesteel Creek on the western portion of Lake Mitchell.

“The project will include a single span 86 foot 6 inch pre-stressed concrete girder bridge with berm abutments and related improvements,” said Schroeder. “Estimated cost for the design and construction is $3,537,391.”

The city’s commitment to the project is 20-percent, or $863,000.

Schroeder says the awarding of the grant is anticipated in the spring of 2026. “The design would not start until 2027 when funding would be approved, if the BIG grant is approved,” he said

The council unanimously approved pursuing the grant.

In other business, the group approved the E-911 contract with surrounding counties, approved several plats and approved contingency transfers for fiscal year 2025.
