The annual DWU Day of Service will be held Tuesday, April 30. This unique service project sends students, faculty and staff fanning out across the Mitchell community performing service projects. More than 300 students and staff are scheduled to participate.
McGovern Center director and associate professor of religion and philosophy Dr. Joel Allen is chairing the service event this year. “The McGovern Center, as a central focus, seeks to encourage service to others through hard work, humility, creativity and compassion. Nothing aligns with our mission more than organizing the DWU Day of Service. Planning began months ago and involves coordinating with multiple community partners. The best part is that everyone enjoys the day and comes away with the good feeling of having done something to demonstrate that DWU truly cares for the Mitchell community.”
Teams will perform a variety of service projects from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. including at the Abbott House, MHS Caring Closet, Mitchell Food Pantry, LB Williams Elementary School, Bridegwater-Emery Elementary School, Weekend Snack Pack, Prehistoric Indian Village, Mitchell Municipal Golf Course, Graceland Cemetery, Lake Mitchell, Pepsi Soccer Complex, RiverTree Church, Mitchell Area Community Theatre, James Valley Community Center, Carnegie Resource Center, Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota, Salvation Army, Edgewood, Wesley Acres, First United Methodist Church, Cabela Drive, Corn Palace, Cadwell Park, First Lutheran Child Learning Center, Wild Oak Golf Course and across the campus.
