Davison County Commissioners unanimously reinstate county-wide burn ban

A week after lifting a county-wide burn ban, Davison County unanimously agreed to reinstate the ban during Tuesday’s meeting. Acting Davison County Emergency Manager Karen Wegleitner consulted with county fire officials who supported reinstatement. A recent fire straddling the Davison and Hanson County line reignited despite snow on the ground. It nearly burned two homes.

Wegleitner read a statement from Sheriff Steve Harr, who decides whether to issue citations, opposing a suggestion to allow supervised burns. “I have seen numerous fires that reignite after being put out. I believe we are either in a ban or we aren’t. It would be very difficult for our office to enforce it on one party and not another. I spoke with Deputy Reitzel and he is of the same opinion. Again, we are against this idea and believe a ban is a ban.”

Commissioners concurred and will ultimately decide when the reinstated ban should be lifted.
