Davison County Veterans Day gathering draws a big crowd to celebrate veterans

A capacity crowd filled the Davison County Fairgrounds meeting hall for the annual Davison County Veterans Day Recognition program.

Mitchell area Veterans organizations recognized a number veterans, soldiers and auxiliary members. American Legion Post 18 and 40 and 8 Voiture recognized Craig Bennett as its veteran of the year. Jeremy White was awarded VFW Post 2750 veteran of the year. Grace Nisbet was named Disabled American Veterans Chapter 27 veteran of the year. Eva Pickinpaugh is American Legion Post 18 Auxiliary member of the year. Staff Sargeant Robert Bucholz was named full-time soldier of the year and Sergeant Christopher Nemec part-time soldier of the year.

Veterans Dave Schutte, Christopher Nisbet and Steve Thuringer each received a Quit of Valor. Numerous other volunteers were awarded State Commander’s Pins for their service.

Keynote-speaker, retired Chief Warrant Officer Ken Schoenfelder of Mitchell shared his overseas experiences during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm from 35 years ago.
