Day County fatal crash

A 51 year old man from Rochester, Minnesota man died Wednesday night in a single-vehicle, pedestrian crash near Pierpont, South Dakota.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety reported two pedestrians were driving westbound on 130th Street in a Kia earlier in the evening when they struck a deer. They returned in a second vehicle, a Honda CR-V, and parked in the westbound lane facing east. They exited the Honda, leaving the headlights on. At the same time, the 21 year old male driver of an International commercial truck was driving westbound on 130th Street when he approached the parked Honda. The driver of the International tried to avoid the vehicle and struck the male pedestrian, who was standing in the road, before striking the Honda. The male pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the International and the second pedestrian, a 53 year old woman from Bath were not injured.

Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
