Democratic and Republican legislative leaders elected

House Democrats and Republicans have elected their leadership teams for the upcoming 100th Session of the South Dakota Legislature.

House Republicans elected Representative Scott Odenbach of Spearfish Majority leader and Representative Marty Overweg of New Holland Assistant Majority leader. Majority Whips include Representatives Jessica Bahmuller of Alexandria, Les Heineman of Flandreau, Greg Jamison of Sioux Falls, Brandei Schaefbauer of Aberdeen and Bethany Soye of Sioux Falls. The GOP has also nominated Representative Jon Hansen as Speaker of the House.

House Democrats elected Erin Healy of Sioux Falls Minority leader, Eric Emery of Rosebud Assistant Minority leader and Representatives Kadyn Wittman of Sioux Falls and Nicole Uhre-Balk Minority Whips.

Senate Republicans elected Senator Jim Mehlhaff of Pierre Majority leader and Senator Carl Perry of Aberdeen Assistant Majority leader. Majority Whips include Senators Randy Deibert of Spearfish, Sue Peterson of Sioux Falls, Kevin Jensen of Canton and Tom Pischke of Dell Rapids.

Senator Kris Karr of Sioux Falls is the GOP nominee for President Pro-Tem.

Senate Democrats elected Senator Liz Larson of Sioux Falls Minority leader, Jamie Smith of Sioux Falls assistant Minority leader and Red Dawn Foster of Pine Ridge Minority Whip.

Opening day of the 2025 legislative session is January 14th.
