Drowning victim identified

Davison County authorities have identified a body recovered in the James River east of Mitchell as a man who apparently drowned.

In a news release Davison County Sheriff Steve Harr says around 4:15 Friday afternoon, the Mitchell Regional 911 center was notified of a possible drowning in the James River at the intersection of 250th Street and 411th Avenue. Personnel from several agencies began searching the river using a variety means including drones, sonar and people on the riverbank.

The search was called off around 10:45 pm and resumed at 8:20 Saturday morning. It was ended six hours later due to dangerous weather conditions.

At approximately 5:25 pm Saturday afternoon authorities received a report of a possible body floating in the river. A drone confirmed it was a body which was removed from the water by boat and was taken to the Bittner Funeral Chapel. Family members identified the victim as as 28 year old Juan Carlos Oballe Ixquiactap of Sioux Falls.
