DWU students recognized for their on-campus voter registration effort

Secretary of State Monae Johnson paid a visit to Dakota Wesleyan University Tuesday evening to thank a group of students who led a successful on-campus voter registration drive signing-up 28 new voters.

Johnson presented the Gladys Pyle Award to the group. “She was an incredible woman in the history of South Dakota,” said Johnson. “She actually was the first female South Dakota Secretary of State, she was the first female elected to the South Dakota Legislature and the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.”

Johnson says registering young voters is crucial to South Dakota’s future. “To encourage them to participate in their civic duty, to encourage them to participate in South Dakota and how it prospers,” Johnson said. “What we need to do to keep it on the right track. So, this is their South Dakota.”

Johnson is also reminding South Dakotans the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming election is October 21st.
