Mitchell fire officials have determined the cause of a fire that damaged a second-floor bedroom late Thursday afternoon in a home in the 700 block of West Fifth Avenue.
Fire Marshal Shannon Sandoval says there were some juveniles up there playing with a lighter. “It sounds like at one time, that lighter was used to start the bed on fire,” said Sandoval. “Whether that was intentional or not, we’re not sure at this time. We’re working with the Mitchell Police Department.”
As well as the family itself to go through the process.
He says the family was displaced from the home Thursday night but is unsure about when they can return to the residence. “The first floor and the basement are okay”, Sandoval said. “The upstairs is going to need some work. It’s not a loss but it is going to need to be cleaned and mitigated.”
Sandoval says fortunately no one was hurt.
