Plans for a new Avera Clinic and Hospital near Dell Rapids are moving forward, in spite of opposition from nearby residents.
Avera’s plan recently won rezoning approval from the Minnehaha County Commission and the Dell Rapids City Council.
Residents of a nearby development question the location, saying costs and plans need to be completed.
Among those speaking in support of the facility was former Governor Dennis Daugaard, who lives near Dell Rapids. “The current rooms are too small, the shared shower facility is very outmoded,” said Daugaard. “A new larger facility would encourage more medical professionals to move to Del Rapids, provide more and better services, and more importantly, it would provide a more modern equipment and the possibility of same-day surgeries.”
Officials say a conditional use permit will also be needed for the project to move forward.
That will give the public another opportunity to review and possibly appeal any decisions made before the county and city officials give final approval for the project.
