Gov. Kristi Noem announced the Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved a $1,663,000 Clean Water State Revolving Fund loan for the City of Mitchell to make wastewater lift station improvements.
The loan will be administered through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Terms are 1.375 percent for 30 years.
“I am pleased to announce that the City of Mitchell will receive this assistance,” said Gov. Noem. “The loan will help the city upgrade its wastewater system to better serve its customers and protect the environment.”
Improvements include construction of a new lift station at the intersection of 407th Avenue and North Harmon Drive. The new station replaces the Daily Drive lift station which, due to its age, location, and design, cannot be rehabilitated to meet future needs. The Daily Drive lift station will be converted into a flow through manhole.
The nonpoint source funding component provides $163,000 for the continued installation of nonpoint source best management practices in the Firesteel Creek watershed basin, such as stream stabilization, grazing management, agricultural waste management, and vegetative buffers. Mitchell will partner with the James River Water Development District to implement the best management practices to reduce sediment and nutrient loads in the watershed.
The loan along with local funding will cover the estimated cost of the project.
The State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fund the Clean Water State Revolving Fund Program, which provides low-interest loans for wastewater, storm water, and nonpoint source projects.
