Governor Larry Rhoden has selected his Lieutenant Governor. “Ladies and gentlemen, I am more than pleased to announce my selection to the next Lieutenant Governor of the State of South Dakota, Tony Venhuizen”, said Rhoden.
He says VenHuizen is a good fit. “He understands the complexity of the state education formula, he understands the complexities of our property tax system, shares my passions on many issues and finds ways to improve them”, the Governor said. “He will preside over the Senate with experience and professionalism.”
And prepared to fulfill the duties of Governor if called upon.
Lieutenant Governor designate Tony Venhuizen is looking forward to his new role. “The job of the Lieutenant Governor is to be a supporter and partner to the Governor,” VenHuizen said.
He also values the role of Lieutenant Governor as president of the Senate. “The Lieutenant Governor has the unique position as having a constitutional role in two separate branches,” he continued. “And that means he can and should be a link between the Governor and the Legislature.”
VenHuizen has already resigned from the House in anticipation of his confirmation by the State Senate.
As a side-note, VenHuizen’s grandfather was Senator Henry Poppen of DeSmet and his father-in law is former Governor Dennis Daugaard for whom he served as chief of staff.
