Investigators searching for the cause of a Saturday night house fire

Mitchell fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a two-story house in the 500 block of East Second Avenue Saturday night.

Fire investigator Shannon Sandoval says a neighbor called in the fire around 9:15 pm. Police officers were first on the scene. “They found a pretty large fire in a three-seasons room off of the rear of the home,” Sandoval said. “So unfortunately, when we got there, just a little bit behind, the fire had extended into the house from the outside.”

He says firefighters got the initial fire knocked down quickly. “Because of the balloon frame, the old type of construction, it did work its way into the walls, and we were chasing it upstairs,” said Sandoval.

No one was hurt however a pet dog was found deceased inside the home.

Sandoval says security footage from the home should help with the investigation. At this point the cause is undetermined.

Sandoval says around 20 firefighters were on the scene including mutual aid from Ethan for just over four hours.
