Kids get cozy Christmas gifts

Children from seventeen Mitchell area families are celebrating an early Christmas thanks to Slumberland and the Mitchell United Way.

Mitchell Slumberland owner Kyle Purintun says the 40 Winks program has been around since 1991. “Each year, we partner with local charities,” he said. “The United Way in particular help us find needy children and other churches help out… but we give mattresses to children to get them off the floor or into better sleeping situations.”

Executive Director Ashley Hobbs says the Mitchell United Way serves as the connecting agent to the families. “(We) reach out to our agencies and see if they have anybody in need and basically just coordinate and make it all happen,” said Hobbs. “And then we also are the supplier of sheets and mattress protectors and things like that for the families.”

She says several other organizations donated items as well.

The families stopped by Slumberland Thursday evening to pick up their items and enjoy some Christmas treats.
