Land Transfer Complete for Workforce Housing Development

The transfer of 22 acres of land from Avera Queen of Peace Hospital to the Mitchell Area Development Corporation became official Friday.

MADC president Ken Schlimgen says the Ridgeview on Foster workforce housing development has been in the works for several years. “I think this signing means a brighter future for Mitchell,” said Schlimgen. “It also helps a lot of our workers and workforce people to have an opportunity for improving their quality of life by having better housing.”

Avera Queen of Peace CEO Dr. Hilary Rockwell says Avera could have done different things with the property. “But this was the right thing to do, not just for our workforce …like I said to provide better housing and opportunity for folks to own a house at a reasonable price,” Rockwell said. “Because you’re getting the land donated and infrastructure…the majority will be covered by grants.”

Which in turn makes the price more reasonable for workers in a variety of fields.

The next step is seeking bids for infrastructure.
