Lincoln County has joined the list of counties approving a half-penny sales tax increase to provide property tax relief for homeowners.
The half-penny sales tax option was initiated by Governor Larry Rhoden to give counties a local option to reduce property taxes.
Commissioner Jim Schmidt was among those voting in favor…but he wants county residents to determine the final outcome with a public vote.
“I would certainly like to see this implemented, and if it means that we have to carry papers and get signatures, so be it,” said Schmidt. “I would like to see all 70-some thousand people, or how many voters we have, vote on this critical issue.”
Seven counties have approved the plan…but it’s been referred to the November ballot for voters to decide in Codington County.
