Man charged with murder and improper disposal appears in court

A 60 year old man from Detroit, Michigan charged in the death of a woman in Mitchell last month appeared in a Mitchell courtroom Tuesday for an advisory hearing.

Anthony Melvin Harris is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of improper disposal.

According to court documents, the remains of 57 year old Melody Faye Gooch of Detroit were discovered in the I-90 Travel Center parking lot in Mitchell shortly before 11 pm on March 11th.

Surveillance video and electronic records led authorities to Harris who drove a semi-truck and trailer to Yakima, Washington and was contacted by authorities on March 14th.

He was extradited to South Dakota late last week and is being held in the Davison County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday, April 15th in Mitchell.
