The City of Mitchell has officially completed a comprehensive study and evaluation of the Lake Mitchell Dam to meet requirements of the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR). This study and evaluation was to ensure the continued protection of downstream residents, property, and infrastructure.
The updated analysis shows that the City cannot safely pass the 50% PMF which is a requirement for reservoirs in South Dakota the Size of Lake Mitchell. The analysis also showed that upgrading the spillway to meet the requirements would not eliminate downstream risk.
However, the City of Mitchell has requested a variance to allow the Lake Mitchell Dam to stay at the 23% PMF, and if granted, move forward with the lake dredge project.
The DANR has reviewed the analysis and report by Houston Engineering and is recommending approval of the variance request with qualifications.
The City is optimistic that the project can get back on track after the DANR meetings conclude. The City will provide a more detailed update at the upcoming City Council meeting on April 6th.
